# Is there an AI Act certificate?

> Only notified bodies issue AI Act certificates, and only on one route. Most high-risk systems use internal control. What a firm can show instead.

## The short answer

There is no AI Act certificate that a firm can buy to cover its use of AI. The Act knows one kind of certificate: the one a **notified body** issues after a conformity assessment under **Annex VII** (Art. 44). It applies to some high-risk systems, and it is issued to the **provider** of the system, not to the firms that use it.

## Who may certify

- Only notified bodies may issue AI Act certificates. A Member State’s notifying authority designates them (Art. 28 and following).
- Notified bodies must stay independent and may not offer consultancy to the providers they assess (Art. 31(5)).
- A certificate is valid for up to 4 years for Annex III systems and up to 5 years for Annex I systems, and is renewed after a new assessment (Art. 44).
- In the sources checked on the date below, no notified body designated under the AI Act was found.

## Most high-risk systems never see a notified body

For high-risk systems in Annex III, points 2 to 8 (for example hiring, education, credit, essential services), the provider uses **internal control** (Annex VI): it assesses the system itself, signs the EU declaration of conformity (Art. 47) and affixes the CE marking (Art. 48). Only biometric systems (Annex III, point 1) may need a notified body. AI in products under Annex I follows the conformity procedure of that product law.

A deployer, the firm that uses an AI system, runs no conformity assessment at all.

## What a firm can show instead

When a client, an insurer or an authority asks how you handle the AI Act, you can show your own records:

1. **An AI inventory**: which AI systems you use or provide, for what, since when.
2. **A role record**: for each system, whether you are provider, deployer, importer or distributor, and why.
3. **AI literacy records**: the measures you took to support the AI literacy of your staff (Art. 4).
4. **Transparency labels**: where people talk to AI or see AI-generated content, how you tell them (Art. 50).

The templates page has a free form for each of these. None of them is a certificate, and none needs one.

## Who sells “certificates” on these searches

Searches for an AI Act certificate show training providers and consultancies that sell course certificates or their own audit seals. These can be useful as proof of training, but they are not AI Act certificates: the Act gives them no legal effect. This site sells nothing and offers no certificate of its own.
